Examination of the Samviq Methodology for the Subjective Assessment of Multimedia Quality

چکیده
The Video Quality Experts Group (VQEG) is preparing a large number of co-ordinated subjective multimedia quality tests. These tests will be performed by laboratories located in Europe, Asia and North America. The subjective data will be used to evaluate the performance of competing objective multimedia quality assessment algorithms. The reliability of the subjective test data is therefore of great importance for VQEG’s task. Although standards were produced on the basis of best available evidence obtained from related fields, relatively few multimedia subjective quality studies were performed to address specifically the most appropriate and reliable assessment method for multimedia. There is a need for more substantive research evidence to be published in order to validate and improve existing multimedia quality assessment standards. ITU-T SG9, ITU-R WP6Q and VQEG are supporting activities on developing new methods for assessing the subjective quality of multimedia systems. Recently, a new multimedia subjective quality assessment method, named SAMVIQ, has been proposed for standardisation within ITU-R WP6Q. SAMVIQ was originally an EBU methodology and has been designed specifically for assessing the perceptual quality of video delivered as part of a multimedia service. In this paper, two psychovisual experiments investigating the suitability of SAMVIQ are presented. The results of these experiments are discussed within the context of the VQEG multimedia testing programme.

Subjective quality of internet video codecs - Phase 2 evaluations using SAMVIQ
In order to evaluate the performance of video codecs for the internet, EBU Project Group B/VIM has developed a new subjective evaluation methodology called SAMVIQ (Subjective Assessment Methodology for Video Quality). This new methodology was used recently during B/VIM’s Phase 2 subjective evaluations of four codecs designed for internet use: Envivio MPEG-4, QuickTime 6, RealNetworks 9 and Wind...
متن کاملTradeoffs in subjective testing methods for image and video quality assessment
An objective quality estimator for either still images or video should accurately estimate the perceived quality scores of a collection of stimuli. New applications and processing techniques will introduce novel distortions that will need to be quantified in terms of perceived quality in order to confidently evaluate an objective quality estimator. The subjective testing method used to obtain t...
متن کاملQuality Assessment of Stereoscopic Images
Several metrics have been proposed in literature to assess the perceptual quality of two-dimensional images. However, no similar effort has been devoted to quality assessment of stereoscopic images. Therefore, in this paper, we review the different issues related to 3D visualization, and we propose a quality metric for the assessment of stereopairs using the fusion of 2D quality metrics and of ...
متن کاملThe Relation Between MOS and Pairwise Comparisons and the Importance of Cross-Content Comparisons
Subjective quality assessment is considered a reliable method for quality assessment of distorted stimuli for several multimedia applications. The experimental methods can be broadly categorized into those that rate and rank stimuli. Although ranking directly provides an order of stimuli rather than a continuous measure of quality, the experimental data can be converted using scaling methods in...
متن کاملTowards a comparable and reproducible subjective outdoor multimedia quality assessment
For a long time, subjective multimedia quality assessment has been performed in dedicated laboratories according to well known standards. However, the consumption mode of multimedia content and applications has significantly changed during the last years. Currently, the users’ context is subject to more variations than in previous times where users were sitting on their sofa watching television...
